Network Marketing – My Search For the Perfect Product to Market

Over the last six to seven years I had begun to pick up that there were people out there making a living off the internet. This interested me with my IT background. Now in South Africa there weren’t too many people around that knew anything about this – a lot of our telephone exchanges didn’t even support DSL! So any web surfing had to be done with a 56K modem which seldom had a data transfer rate faster than 33K, very time consuming and very frustrating.

There was however, an entrepreneur by the name of Peter Carruthers, who also had an IT background. When I first met him he was holding seminars called “How to Crashproof Your Business!” which taught one how to protect yourself from the banks and creditors should your business fail! Peter knew a lot about this, having been down that road, and as they say, “got the T-shirt”. I also subscribed to his newsletter, it was in this newsletter that he talked about Corey Rudl who was probably one of the first internet marketing guru’s, and very successful at it to. Peter had applied what Corey taught to his own business and raved about how it had changed it for the better. I also bought Corey’s guide to Internet Marketing, at first it just sat in it’s box while I attempted other more practical things (or so I thought) to generate an income. I mean whenever you talked about making a living off the internet people looked at you as though you were living in cloud cuckoo land!

The important thing about doing business on the internet is that it is GLOBAL!

What Corey taught was that to make a living off the internet one had to find out what people were interested in and what they were searching for on the internet and cater to that market. One quickly discovered that people are interested in the following; golf, sex, weightloss, weightloss, weightloss, motivation, dating, dog behaviour problems, learn to play guitar, travel, make money online and making money from home! There are other subjects as well, but these seem to be the most popular.

And so I continued trying to make a living doing more practicle things whilst all the while wondering what I could focus on doing on the internet. Then one day I was handed a flyer at a intersection which said “if I wanted to start my own home based business to call this number”, this was one of those light-bulb moments for me. One of the topics that people were interested in on the internet was how to make money from home, maybe I could combine this with the internet – and so I called the number. And that was my introduction to network marketing aka multi-level marketing (MLM) aka referral marketing and recently I came across yet another term, social-level marketing. I have no doubt that there are many more terms referring to this type of marketing.

What is Network Marketing?……

Lets start with a definition. The DSA’s (Direct Selling Association) definition is, I quote, “Companies that manufacture and distribute goods or services through Direct Sellers also referred to as distributors, consultants, sales agents, independent contractors and by other various names, directly to consumers in a face to face manner away from a fixed retail location” end quote. AMWAY Copyright© 2009 introduced the concept some 60 plus years ago.

The goods distributed vary from household detergents through to nutrient supplements (very popular at the moment – everyone is into the “wellness industry”). Services cover legal aid/advice, also very popular is insurance; covering anything from funeral policies to cash back hospital plans.

My goal was to do this via the internet, and this meant I had to find a product that was global by nature – you can sell legal aid or a funeral policy that is dictated by the laws of one country in another, you can sell household detergents, vitamin supplements etc. in different countries but you now have a transport component (ie you have to get the product there) so my search began for the perfect product.

Network Marketing

Businesses from HomeSo I guess the first question is why do you want to run a business from home? Well the most common answer for this will be for extra income and for the benefits of being able to start your business alongside your traditional job if you have one. This gives you the path of least resistance in starting a business. For example, if you try to set up a traditional business you have masses of overheads, rent to pay, employees to pay, bills to pay and all this is whilst trying to build a customer base before you can take a penny yourself. It’s for this reason most businesses fail in the first year. A business from home on the other hand can be run in your spare time, requires very little outlay and you generally have very little if any overheads. This makes a home business very easy to set up. It’s a great way to secure an income before setting out on your own, meaning you have some income already coming your way easing that burden in the initial phases of self employment. The most important thing for me and what made me decide to travel this road was the free time it buys you to spend with your family and on your hobbies. If you set your business up right and put the effort in early it could virtually run itself. Meaning you are free to pursue other interests whilst earning what we call a residual income. That’s an income that continues to be paid for life.So what business should I do from home?Network Marketing – Below is the Wikipedia definition of Network Marketing:Multi-level marketing (MLM), (also called network marketing, direct selling, and referral marketing,) is a term that describes a marketing structure used by some companies as part of their overall marketing strategy. The structure is designed to create a marketing and sales force by compensating promoters of company products not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of other promoters they introduce to the company, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation. The products and company are usually marketed directly to consumers and potential business partners by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. Is Network Marketing a good choice? Well it’s a fantastically easy business to set up and for me the real beauty is the way it is structured. The person who introduces you can only be successful if you are, so they have a vested interest in making sure you succeed. This means that the support and help you receive whilst getting your business going is second to none. Unlike a traditional business model where you learn by trial and error and those errors usually being costly, with Network Marketing you learn by someone else’s mistakes so you are free to build that residual income we talked about earlier. With this in mind the one thing I would say to people about Network Marketing is it is not a get rich quick scheme, it should be looked at as a 3-5 year plan. Don’t get me wrong you will earn money usually from the outset but to make a real level of Residual Income will take approximately this long depending on your level of commitment and success. In my opinion sure beats working 40 years for a crummy gold watch (if your lucky!)Internet Marketing – Why Internet Marketing? Well in much the same way as Network Marketing it has very low cost set up fees, no overheads and you can get started with a bit of imagination and a desire to learn.Other schemes are actual jobs like envelope stuffing at home etc and these can be a valuable alternative but bear in mind they do not pay very well so depending on your income need these may bot be the right focus for you!

Crush it With Facebook Marketing

Just Yesterday I attended a fantastic live webinar my friend Jonathan Budd put together with some of the hottest tips for marketing on Facebook that will blow your mind. If you are going to play on Facebook why not monetize some of your time spent on it. Below are some of my notes from the webinar and if you are interested in seeing more, I’ll point you in the right direction.

Facebook currently has 400 million active users.

It is the fastest growing advertising platform and is fast becoming the new Google as far as online marketing. It is an absolute playground that is producing an endless watering hole of leads for any business. Are you in this game?

Do not cash in all your chips on Google AdWords Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing. Diversify your marketing strategies. If you want to put your message where the people are, Facebook is golden.

The difference between Facebook and Google PPC Marketing.

Question; What is the purpose of a search engine? To find your son a baseball glove, movie show times, cell phone reviews, etc., etc., right? At its core, it is a tool to solve the users problem or issue. This is where Facebook is completely different and the beauty of its contrast is the key to massive success with your internet marketing on this platform.

Facebook is a place for establishing identity and sharing interests. It’s where we share our likes and dislikes and even specify in detail what those things are by joining groups, being a ‘fan’ and posting content of interest.

No one on Facebook is entering keywords for problem solving, so the key to marketing on Facebook is marketing to its user’s interests, their emotional plane and their needs directly, rather than a problem. This is definitely a mindset change from Google marketing.

The beauty of creating ads on Facebook is the amount of usable data it has on the interests of 400 million users. Mixing and matching to define the right demographic for your ad is the pathway to massive success on this platform and you can literally be ready to test in 5 minutes.

Here are some of the awesome targeting features you have at your fingertips with Facebook ads:

Facebook uses IP addresses and location info from user profiles.
You can target very specific demographics for any type of person or use exclusionary tactics. When you enter your keywords, Facebook gives you a drop-down menu containing TONS of related keywords that it auto-pulls from its data of user profiles.
“Likes and Interests” are tightly integrated with information from user profiles, from occupation, Facebook Groups and Pages they are connected or affiliated with and more.
How about targeting people at various education levels? You can do this as well.
Enter Fan Pages and Groups of high profile players in your niche markets and target their friends.
However, before you get started with marketing on Facebook…

You’ve got to have your game plan in place before you begin. You must have solid sales and autoresponder campaigns ready to go.

Then it’s time to test your ads and you want to test a lot of them because Facebook lowers your cost per click if you have a high Click-Through Rate. That means cheaper leads.

Get your landing pages ready to go and make sure it really flows with your ad. Make them visually compatible, congruency is key. For example; a company letterhead design that matches the card stock or design of the company business card. You want to see visual compatibility.
